Apple announced Monday that all its campuses and data centers around the world are now using renewable power to operate.

In a statement released by the company, Apple said that all its global facilities are now powered by 100% renewable energy sources. The initiative was introduced as a part of the company’s efforts to fight climate change and promote a healthier environment.

Shifting fully to clean energy is considered a massive victory for Apple who has been working on its renewable investments for years. This latest achievement reportedly includes all offices, retail stores, data centers, and co-located facilities in 43 countries worldwide.

The company also announced that nine of its new manufacturing partners have committed to building Apple products with power from renewable energy sources. This brings the company’s supplier commitment to 23.

“We’re committed to leaving the world better than we found it. After years of hard work we’re proud to have reached this significant milestone,” Tim Cook, Apple’s Chief Executive Officer, said.

“We’re going to keep pushing the boundaries of what is possible with the materials in our products, the way we recycle them, our facilities and our work with suppliers to establish new creative and forward-looking sources of renewable energy because we know the future depends on it.”

To date, Apple has 25 of its own renewable energy sources operating around the world. These facilities have a combined generation capacity of 626 megawatts. 286 megawatts of this renewable power comes from solar PV generation that went online in 2017.

Apple also has another fifteen projects still in construction. Once built, it is expected that over 1.4 gigawatts of renewable energy will be distributed across 11 countries.

According to the company, since 2011, their clean power programs have significantly reduced the company’s greenhouse gas emissions by up to 54 percent. They’ve also prevented around 2.1 million metric tons of CO2 from getting into the atmosphere.

Right now, Apple is reportedly building two other data centers in Denmark that are all set to run on clean power as well.

Do you believe that other governments and tech companies should follow Apple’s lead and shift to 100% renewable energy sources for power?
