Disney just created an augmented reality, Star Wars game that will let people play like a real Jedi Knight!

Yesterday, at the 2017 D23 Expo in Anaheim, Disney unveiled the Star Wars™: Jedi Challenges, an augmented reality game that will allow anyone to undergo some of the most iconic experiences from the famous movie. Some of these experiences will include the ability to battle AR Star War toys, wield a lightsaber, and play the Holochess.

Just imagine igniting a lightsaber while ‘awakening’ the Jedi in you!

If they’re lucky, people might even have a shot at fighting some powerful Sith Lords like Darth Maul and Darth Vader. That we have to wait for as Disney drops more information about the game in the coming days.

In the meantime, the thought of playing the Holochess, the game played by ‘mighty’ Chewbacca and R2-D2 in Star Wars: A New Hope is enough to excite every fan of the film around the world.

The new Disney game will make use of an AR headgear, made in partnership with Lenovo, and a smartphone to do the rest of the work. A video teaser was also released showing a woman sporting an AR headset and igniting a lightsaber.

The new Disney product has no release date yet, but the company promised that more updates would be released in the months to come.

As of now, augmented reality, pretty much like virtual reality, is still a struggling industry.

With the cost of developing AR/ VR content–not to mention how expensive the hardware needed to run them is–and the amount of effort needed to break into the market, making these technologies a part of our existing culture will require some serious work. Perhaps, targeting fans of famous movies and games is indeed a good start to help familiarize people with how awesome augmented/virtual reality can be.
