Scientists Develop Low-Cost Energy-Efficient Alloys

A team of scientists has developed low-cost alloys that could potentially reduce loss in electricity transmission.

For a while now, researchers have been trying to figure out how to create a new low-cost energy efficient material. Such material should not only reduce electricity loss during transmission, but it should also enable an efficient transformation too.

This would save energy and ultimately reduce the emission of hazardous gases such as CO2 during production.

To attempt to achieve this, scientists from Tianjin University (China), along with researchers from the United States and Japan came together to create the material.

They succeeded. According to the publication in the Journal of Alloys and Compounds, the researchers developed a new energy efficient iron-based alloys.

Why is this a big deal, you ask?

The materials’ magnetic and mechanical properties, as well as its low cost, could create new opportunities. For example, with such an efficient system, manufacturers can conveniently reduce the size of their electronics.

How the Researchers Developed the Low-Cost Energy-Efficient Alloys

To develop the new amorphous soft-magnetic alloys, the researchers analyzed only the low-cost alloy system. These include Iron, Silicon, Boron, and Copper.

As such, expensive alloying elements such as molybdenum and niobium were generally avoided, according to Andrei Bazlov, one of the study’s authors.

Bazlov, who is also an engineer at NUST MISIS said; 

“All the alloys examined in the work were obtained using industrial technology — quenching from a liquid state (melt spinning technique).”

The scientists had to analyze tons of Fe82-85B13-16Si1Cu1 alloys to determine the chemical composition. With that, they were also able to figure out the heat treatment modes on the mechanical as well as the magnetic properties.

This allowed them to produce durable alloys with high magnetic properties and technological plasticity.

“In terms of their properties, the new amorphous iron-based alloys obtained by us surpass common industrial analogs not only in Russia but also abroad,” said Bazlov. 

One major advantage of the newly developed material is its low cost. According to the engineer, this is due to the absence of expensive alloying elements and simplicity of production.

The researchers intend to implement developments in the industry soon.
