Google is making an open-source library for quantum machinelearning applications available to research communities.

Businesses are starting to see quantum computing as an essential component in this high-tech world.

In a 2019 Fujitsu study, 70 percent of businesses said they want to use quantum computing to analyze data and develop solutions rapidly. Also, 89 percent said they believe inferior computing power is making them less competitive.

Considering these numbers, it’s understandable that tech giants are investing in various quantum computing projects.

For example, Microsoft recently launched its Azure Quantum project. Similarly, Xanadu in Toronto has also introduced a quantum computing platform called Pennylane. Meanwhile, Honeywell is already developing a new quantum computing system.

Despite the numerous projects out there, a bulk of the attention will be focused on Google’s TensorFlow project, and that’s not surprising. Google is not only popular in numerous developer communities, but it also has an impressive track record in the quantum field.

Now, the company is taking a step further by making its quantum computing library available to the research.

Releasing a Library For Quantum Machine-Learning Applications

On Monday, Google announced that it’s making an open-source library for quantum machine-learning applications available.

TensorFlow Quantum is a free library of applications. It’s an add-on to the TensorFlow toolkit, which is not only useful in machine learning, but it also helps developers across the world.

In a blog post announcement, Alan Ho, Product Lead and Masoud Mohseni, Technical Lead, Google Research  said:

“Today, in collaboration with the University of Waterloo, X, and Volkswagen, we announce the release of TensorFlow Quantum (TFQ), an open-source library for the rapid prototyping of quantum ML models.”

The researchers pointed out that advancements in quantum research could have a profound impact on the world’s biggest issues. For instance, it could lead to breakthroughs in fields like medicine, materials, as well as sensing and communication.

Already, we see improvements derived from quantum computing in areas like cancer detection and earthquake forecasting. Researchers have also used quantum research for predicting extreme weather and the discovery of new exoplanets.

However, developers have never been able to fully utilize the massive inroads quantum analysis can provide when handling large volumes of data. And that’s due to the absence of analytical tools.

The library for quantum machine-learning applications is a first step in addressing this issue. By releasing TensorFlow Quantum, Google is making a significant move towards expanding the reach of quantum computing.
