Elon Musk has reportedly found a solution to help clear out the Model 3 production bottlenecks of Tesla: a hackathon.

On Monday, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced that the company is currently hosting a hackathon to solve the problem in the Model 3’s automated production line. It’s a known fact that Tesla has been struggling with automating its Model 3 production leading to long-term production delays.

Just last month, the billionaire genius blamed the company’s robots for the mishap in an exclusive interview with CBS News.

“We got complacent about some of the things that we felt were our core technology…We put too much new technology into the Model 3 all at once. This — this should have been staged,” Musk told Gayle King.

“Yes, they did…We had this crazy, complex network of conveyor belts…And it was not working, so we got rid of that whole thing.”

Musk also admitted the automation effort failure of Tesla in a letter sent to its shareholders earlier this month. A part of the letter read:

“[…]a step change in manufacturing doesn’t come without its challenges, particularly early in the process, and we made a mistake by adding too much automation too quickly. In those select areas where we have had challenges ramping fully automated processes, such as portions of the battery module line, part of the material flow system, and two steps of general assembly, we have temporarily dialed back automation and introduced certain semi-automated or manual processes while we work to eventually have full automation take back over.”

Musk confirmed the hackathon in response to Ars Technica‘s tweet. “Fair criticism, but we’re fixing it fast. Hackathon going on right now to fix 2 worst robot production chokepoints. Looks promising,” Musk said.

This is hardly a surprising move by Musk who has rarely failed to disappoint with his unconventional approaches to almost every issue his companies have faced. However, it’s yet to be seen whether this will actually solve the issues of the Model 3.

Do you believe that the hackathon Elon Musk staged will finally solve Tesla’s problem with its Model 3 production line?
