TikTok appears to be testing a new feature that will allow users of the popular video-sharing app to add a link to their personal sites on their profiles.

TikTok is testing a new feature to enable users to add website links to their profiles.

Most social media pages allow users to add their website URLs to profiles.

However, the feature has strangely been absent from TikTok until now. A few days ago, a user shared screenshots from TikTok’s Edit Profile screen, and it now has a section to enable users to add their URL.

That means users can drive website traffic straight from TikTok. And this could encourage more businesses to sign up and use the social media platform as a marketing tool.

Aside from giving advertisers access to the millions of users on TikTok, the platform can also use the website link to grow its user base. Here’s why.

Adding Direct Website Links to Profiles to Increase User Base

According to a report, TikTok could exceed 50 million users in the United States by 2021.

Data from eMarketer suggests that the platform’s userbase in the U.S. will grow by 21.9 percent to reach 45.4 million by the end of 2021. The growth will continue into next year to reach 52.2 million users.

Compared with the social media platform‘s meteoric rise, the numbers show slowing growth.

At the moment, TikTok’s primary user base consists of younger people. And the report suggests that catering to this limited demographic may slowing the social media app’s growth.

A Principal analyst at eMarketer, Debra Aho Williamson explained:

“TikTok had a breakout year in 2019, and it is incredibly popular among teens at this point. Some are spending multiple hours per day on the app, which is a testament to the incredible stickiness of its scrolling video format. But it has yet to develop a strong following among older generations.”

The social media platform may be looking to appeal to a broader audience by providing an option to add a website link to profile. It’s the bare minimum that TikTok can do to attract more businesses to its platform.

TikTok has not issued an official statement to announce the feature yet. Also, not all users have the ability to add URLs to their profiles yet.

However, we can safely say that more users should have access to the feature in the coming weeks.
