A unique vending machine can give you extra likes and followers on Instagram. What kind of price would you put on popularity?

Lately, Instagram has become the king of social media apps. As we point out here, Instagram is now not only the primary platform for active users but also social media marketers looking to use their personas to drive traffic, engagement, and shine a light on their products and services.

There’s a buzz around Instagram right now, and the average user may find themselves with a disappointing number of followers as compared to the accounts the follow the most.

Never fear! Now you can open up the pocketbook and even the score.

Fake Instagram Followers Goes Mainstream

If you live in Russia or the Czech Republic, buying Instagram likes might be as easy as going to a vending machine at the mall.

The machine, made by Russian company Snatap, sells social media likes and followers. Just sign into your Instagram account through the machine, pay the fee, and check your phone as your follower count skyrockets.

Just be prepared for the mountain of spam you get afterward. It’s a small price to pay for popularity.

Honestly, I’m not surprised that someone made a machine like this. If you want to buy Instagram followers, it’s not really that hard. There’s even a wikiHow article on it.

Is it a good move to make, though? For some, that boost is just what they need to get their blog off of the ground.

According to Dutch blogger Kirsten Jassies, the process works, even if it feels a bit ‘iffy’. “Buying followers worked a little bit for my image,” says Jassies. “Am I happy? Yes. Would I recommend this strategy? No, but I would not lie that it could work for your image.”

“Would I recommend this strategy? No, but I would not lie that it could work for your image.”

Jassies’ distaste with buying likes isn’t unfounded. After all, when you buy Instagram likes, you are buying inflation, and you could end up hurting your brand if your competitors start grabbing likes as fast.

An Inflation of Instagram Likes

When you look at a popular social media figure, the number of likes and followers that they have may be the first real impression you get from them.

You may have clicked on their name after seeing a post you like, and I’ll be the first to admit that a high subscriber count has tempted me. It comes down to perception, and if I perceive that someone is popular, then I’m more inclined to check them out.

But if those perceptions are followed up by lukewarm content, or even nothing, then you may as well throw your money in the fireplace. Even the most aggressive follower-buying scheme falls flat when you don’t have compelling content.

If you want to see a good example of this, check out Michael Aynsley over at the blog Hootsuite. Aynsley documented the purchase of 1,000 followers, and at the end, his advice is just to do things the hard way.

Which puts us at a bit of a crossroads. When you buy Instagram followers, you’re buying inflation, which won’t have a positive lasting effect on your brand. Adversely, that boost may be just what you need to secure the next tier of subscriber count.

I think that it all comes down to how hard you want to work to use that momentum.

For that matter, if you aren’t already working hard, that momentum probably won’t do you much good. That’s why it’s important to keep up with the best posting habits including the best times to post good content.

Of course, if you’re the type that prefers honesty over inflation, you might also want to keep an eye out for social media bots. That way, you can tell when someone’s popularity is bought or genuine.

One thing that I’m sure of, though, is that if you do want that extra boost, all it takes is a few bucks. Whether or not it’s a good idea to take that boost is up to you.

Would you buy followers or likes for your Instagram account? Do schemes like this make likes and followers less important?
