An anti-Facebook Twitter campaign has been launched against Facebook following its involvement with a high profile breach of trust scandal.
For days, Facebook has been in renewed hot water after it was confirmed that political data firm Cambridge Analytica gained access to Facebook’s private data. The firm used the data to manipulate users in favor of then-U.S.-Presidential-candidate Donald J Trump’s 2016 campaign.
Now, an anti-Facebook Twitter campaign has been launched urging people to abandon the social media platform.
According to a report from the New York Times, analytics service ExportTweet confirmed that the hashtag #DeleteFacebook was twitted over 10,000 times on Wednesday. On the previous day, the hashtag garnered over 40,000 mentions as per social media analytics company Digimind.
The campaign is a direct response from users who were upset over the degree of Cambridge Analytica’s data manipulation and Facebook’s involvement, whether the latter’s culpability is due to willingness or negligence. The anti-Facebook Twitter campaign gained the support of thousands of people including celebrities and even WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton.
Early on Wednesday, Acton aired his support to the campaign by tweeting “It is time” together with the #DeleteFacebook hashtag.
It was also reported that the silence of Mark Zuckerberg, Sheryl Sandberg, and other Facebook executives on the scandal over these past days has only fueled the anger of people. However, Zuckerberg broke his silence last night when he appeared in an exclusive interview with CNN.

During the interview with CNN’s Laurie Segall, Zuckerberg admitted that what happened was a “major breach of trust.”
“This was a major breach of trust and I’m really sorry that this happened. We have the basic responsibility to protect people’s data and if we can’t do that, we don’t deserve the opportunity to serve people.”
~ Mark Zuckerberg
The embattled CEO also expressed his regrets for not informing potentially affected users about the data breach earlier.
“That’s definitely something that, looking back on this, I regret that we didn’t do at the time. I think we got that wrong,” Zuckerberg went on to say.
Currently, the #DeleteFacebook Twitter campaign is still gaining traction. Here are other #DeleteFacebook posts from the Twitterverse.
