The Imperial College in London is teaming up with Arborea on a green project.

According to reports, the team intends to develop the world’s first BioSolar leaf – a technology that could improve the quality of air in London and other urban areas.

Startup company Arborea invented a new cultivation system. Using a large solar panel-like structure, the new system allows scientists to grow tiny plant life.

These include diatom, phytoplankton, and microalgae.

The most exciting part of this innovative cultivation system is its flexibility. Users can install it in apartment buildings and other facilities that the solar panel-like structure could fit into.

That means anyone would be able to improve the quality of air in their surroundings, regardless of the location.

BioSolar Leaf For A Cleaner And Less Hungry Planet

Not only does Arborea’s cultivation system remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, but it also produces breathable oxygen. Furthermore, a single acre of the system generates clean air at a rate that’s equivalent to 100 trees.

As a bonus, the system also produces a sustainable source of organic biomass, which provides food additives for plant-based food products.

Ultimately, the BiSolar leaf reduces the planet’s carbon emission and addresses hunger issues in one swoop.

In a statement to the press, Founder and CEO of Arborea, Julian Melchiorri said:

“When I founded Arborea my goal was to tackle climate change while addressing the critical issues related to the food system. This pilot plant will produce sustainable healthy food additives while purifying the air, producing oxygen and removing carbon dioxide from the surrounding environment.”

A Partnership To Save the Planet

Arborea will be partnering with the Imperial College in London on the project. Together, the duo intends to mitigate the environmental impact of urban areas.

In a statement to the press, Associate Provost at Imperial College London, Professor Neil Alford said:

“Air pollution is one of London’s most urgent challenges, and Imperial is committed to finding sustainable and resilient solutions to this threat.”

Imperial is funding the development of the first outdoor BioSolar Leaf cultivation system, which they intend to install in the college’s White City Campus South Site.
