British scientists have made an AI system that can reportedly monitor the spreading of cancer cells in a human body.

Researchers from the Institute of Cancer Research in London, in collaboration with the University of Birmingham, Stanford University in California, and the Queen Mary University, have developed an AI system that could potentially help doctors better identify the stage cancers have reached. The artificial intelligence they called Revolver (Repeated evolution of cancer) can apparently reveal how cancer cells evolve, spread, and defy treatment.

With this new AI technology, doctors could one day be able to determine whether a tumor will become aggressive. It also has the potential to know how likely cancer will respond to treatment and what drug combinations might work on a patient.

“We’ve developed a powerful artificial intelligence tool which can make predictions about the future steps in the evolution of tumors based on certain patterns of mutation that have so far remained hidden within complex data sets,” Dr. Andrea Sottoriva, a researcher from the Institute of Cancer Research’s Evolutionary Genomics and Modelling division, said.

With this tool, we hope to remove one of cancer’s trump cards – the fact that it evolves unpredictably, without us knowing what is going to happen next. By giving us a peek into the future, we could potentially use this AI tool to intervene at an earlier stage, predicting cancer’s next move.

The new AI system has already been tested on 768 samples which came from 178 patients of lung, breast, kidney, and bowel cancer.

Furthermore, Paul Workman, the chief executive of ICR believes that the new treatment could someday enable cancer treatment to be personalized in a “more detailed way and at an earlier stage than is currently possible.” However, the researchers admit that using their technology to treat cancer will still take years of further research.

The ICR researcher’s study has been published in the journal Nature Methods.
