Since it was conceptualized in the 1950s, AI has taken major steps forward, driven by Big Data, powerful computing systems, and deep learning. In the “near” future, AI could radically alter the relationship between humans and machines.
Until then, regardless of the frightening robot conqueror scenarios, AI is already among us, subtly disrupting many facets of daily life. There are six main areas in which we make contact with artificial intelligence systems every day.
You deal with AI every day, whether you know it or not.Click To Tweet1. Video Games
Video games, ideal platforms for experimentation, is where AI has been around the longest and most visible, and where it shines. Game developers leverage AI power to create more immersive, interactive and fun experiences for the player.
In any game in which you can play against the computer, be it chess, soccer or fighting games, you engage in a battle against a form of artificial intelligence.
A few months ago we discussed the HIRO AI, which, unlike conventional computer-controlled gaming systems that fall victim to catastrophic forgetting, is deep learning enabled and can compare previous games to current ones and use that to influence decisions. If you feel like getting your butt kicked in FreeCiv, try to beat HIRO.
2. Predictive Text
Whether you realized it or not, artificial intelligence slipped into content editing, especially with auto-complete functionality to simplify text input. The idea is to anticipate the input of the user by presenting to them, in advance, the word they are about to type. This is one of the simplest–and most infuriating–forms of AI in our every day lives.
3. Smart Conciergerie
AI and voice recognition technologies are growing into high-tech, and virtual assistants are one of the first illustrations. Siri, Cortana, and Google inhabit homes and vehicles. Capable of performing tasks by voice command, these virtual assistants develop at a rapid rate, gaining notoriety. They might be even called upon as murder witnesses in court: this almost happened to Amazon’s Alexa.
4. Smart Factories
Maybe we don’t make direct contact with these artificial intelligence systems, but in factories, robots are gaining ground and shaping the next industrial revolution. Robot workers enable flexible, cost-effective, efficient, and automated production modes. Although still limited in scope currently, in the future, evolving machines and IoT will enable complex industries to benefit from a smart, high-performing and predictive manufacturing process.
5. Data Analytics
Artificial intelligences that collect and analyses data begin enriching some consumer products. Uber’s app, for example, suggests the best point of rendezvous between a driver and a passenger. This is the case also of driver-assistance systems and biometric wearables apps.
6. Web Search and Internet
The simplest search bar of any web page is based on a complex algorithmic system. The proliferation of online data and the advent of social networks led to the development of interactive smart systems.
Facebook’s newsfeed and Google’s search results are the most common AIs we deal with on a daily basis and ones that, at this point, we probably can’t do without.
