Apple plans to unveil its new video streaming service on March 25, 2019. The new service represents nearly $1-billion in investments, original content, and deals with established networks including HBO.

But ahead of this industry-shaking announcement, Apple surprised us with some new iPad specs and releases.

A New Generation of iPads with Familiar Features

The latest generation of iPads features the same A12 bionic processor that the iPhone XS uses. As such, it should share some of the same processing features and power. However, there are some differences between the new iPad Air and iPad Mini.

As you may remember, Apple has not debuted a new iPad Mini model since 2015. Unfortunately, this 2019 model remains largely unchanged and doesn’t feature some seemingly standard traits.

For instance, the iPad Mini won’t have USB-C ports or Face ID. And the camera will be in a different position, so old iPad Mini 4 cases won’t fit (of course). However, it does have a lightning port and a 3.5 mm headphone jack. Here are the rest of the specs:

  • Support for eSIM
  • Touch ID
  • 7.9-inch retina display
  • A12 bionic processor with neural engine and M12 coprocessor
  • Support for the original Apple Pencil
  • 8-megapixel rear camera and 7-megapixel FaceTime camera

You can nab it in silver, space grey, or gold starting at $399 USD.

The 2019 iPad Air vs. Last Year’s iPad Pro

You can only reinvent the wheel so many times. Since Apple has yet to break into the foldable market, these incremental upgrades don’t impress users much. Despite this, Apple soldiers on with small updates to classic devices.

The 2019 iPad Air models represent a refresh of sorts to the 2017 10.5-inch iPad Pro.

As Apple fans will know, the company discontinued this model. So, the new iPad Air could be a suitable replacement for them. And good news: accessories should be interchangeable between these models.

Other features remain similar to other iPads:

  • A12 bionic processor
  • 10.5-inch retina display
  • 64GB or 256GB storage
  • 3.5mm headphone jack
  • 8-megapixel rear camera and 7-megapixel FaceTime camera
  • Touch ID
  • eSIM support
  • Support for the original Apple Pencil
  • Lightning connector

Again, you can pick it up in silver, gold, or space grey. But this model starts at $499 USD.
