On Thursday, Google Maps marked its 15 years by adding new navigation tabs and icons to the app. The company also announced a few upcoming features.

Google first introduced its map app back in 2005.

Its purpose was simple: to enable easy navigation from one point to another. According to Vice President of Product at Google, Dane Glasgow, the app allowed users to explore and get things done.

With over one billion users across the globe, Google Maps has become synonymous with exploration. Now, the tech company wants to celebrate the 15th birthday with new features and look.

In a blog post, Glasgow said:

“Starting today, you’ll see an updated Google Maps app for Android and iOS that gives you everything you need at your fingertips with five easy-to-access tabs: Explore, Commute, Saved, Contribute and Updates.:

Here’s a breakdown of the features.

New Google Maps Navigation Tabs

1. Explore

The first tab, Explore, provides quick access to information, ratings, and reviews on over 200 million places across the world. These include city landmarks, restaurants, and nearby attractions.

2. Commute

Thanks to this Google Maps navigation tab, users can set up a daily commute to find the most efficient route. It offers a real-time traffic update, travel times, as well as alternative ways.

3. Saved

The Saved tab provides a complete view of all the spots you’ve saved. Also, it helps users plan for an upcoming trip and shares recommendations based on previous visits.

4. Contribute

Now users can contribute to Google Maps. In addition to sharing local knowledge about roads, you can also share addresses, business reviews, and photos.

5. Updates

The Update tab includes a feed of the trending, must-see spots from publishers, and local experts. It also enables users to chat directly with businesses to get answers.

Other Upcoming Features on Google Maps

Aside from the navigation tab, Google also previewed a couple of features that are set to roll-out next month. After choosing your route, you should be able to access new features such as Temperature, Security Onboard, and Women’s Section.

An Accessibility update will also help users find public transit lines with features for people with disabilities. These include staffed assistance, accessible entrance and seating, accessible stop-button, among others.
