In a blog post published early this week, Google CEO Sundar Pichai revealed the recent developments in Google’s efforts to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

One of Google’s many goals is to ensure that people get quick access to information like school and business closures. So, in the coming days, businesses and other institutions would be able to mark themselves “temporarily closed” on Google My Business.

The new setup will allow Google Search and Maps to show searchers if a business is temporarily closed due to COVID-19 concerns or other reasons. Pichai also noted that they’re using an artificial intelligence technology called Duplex to get in touch with business owners.

“In the coming days, we’ll make it possible for businesses to easily mark themselves as “temporarily closed” using Google My Business. We’re also using our artificial intelligence (AI) technology Duplex where possible to contact businesses to confirm their updated business hours, so we can reflect them accurately when people are looking on Search and Maps.”

Google’s Other Initiatives to Fight the Coronavirus Pandemic

Aside from helping people find useful information online, Google also launched other programs to help fight the Covid-19 pandemic. Here are some of them.

Eliminating Misinformation

Google vows to eradicate all COVID-19 misinformation on YouTube, Google Maps, Play, and across Google Ads. According to Pichai, the company’s already removed thousands of videos that spread false information about the coronavirus pandemic.

Also, Google’s automated and manual review system is working non-stop to take down fake information and misleading reviews. Furthermore, the company just launched, together with other tech companies, a joint effort to fight COVID-19 misinformation.

Productivity for Remote Users and Students

With more people now working from home, Google has made Meet premium features available for free until July 1, 2020.

Also, the company created new distance learning resources for educators around the world. Google is currently working with Google Educator Groups across the globe to provide content from teachers to teachers.

Relief Efforts

Through its philanthropic arm, Google has pledged $50 million to the global COVID-19 response. The fund aims to support health and science initiatives, provide educational resources, and aid small businesses.

“In the coming weeks, we’ll launch a Distance Learning Fund to help learning continue around the globe, as well as support for small businesses, including resources and access to capital.”

These are just some of the programs Google is working on to aid people and businesses affected by COVID-19. If you want to know more about Google’s efforts, read Sundar Pichai’s full report here.
