Atlassian Challenges GitHub With new Tool Bitbucket Pipelines

Many companies rely on JIRA to stay connected and organized. You can thank the Australian enterprise software company Atlassian for this product. They also developed Confluence, which functions similarly to a wiki or collaborative database.

Founded in 2002 by Scott Farquhar and Mike Cannon-Brookes, the company serves around 125,000 customers. But they also have a GitHub competitor known as Bitbucket for development projects and source code. The site supports Git and Mercurial revision control systems.

As a result of Microsoft’s purchase of GitHub in 2018, many users turned toward rivals like Bitbucket. To support this growing user base, Atlassian developed a supporting tool known as Bitbucket Pipelines.

How Bitbucket Pipelines Seeks to Automate More

Many will note that Bitbucket Pipes’ features bare similarity to those of GitHub Actions. The competing creation allows for workflow automation, business rule expression, and other software development life cycle functionalities.

Like GitHub Actions, Bitbucket Pipelines operates as a continuous integration tool. This empowers developers to release code more often and faster. But Atlassian hopes to, as they did with JIRA, be the next big thing in this sector

The head of product for Bitbucket Cloud, Harpreet Singh, elaborated on the project to Business Insider:

“What we aim to do with Pipes is: A) dramatically simplify the configuration. B) we can have multiple workflows with any number of tools out there. C) we are reducing the complexity [of configuration]”

Singh attributes the need for such tools to the changes in how teams operate. Before, different teams may perform different functions across a project. Now, one team may write code, test it, and then also release it instead.

He also elaborated that Bitbucket Pipelines differs in that is has a “wider trajectory”. The Atlassian created tool focuses on large-scale automation as opposed to pure tool consolidation. “We want to go where the developers are instead of dictating what they should do…” says Singh.
