Lenovo debuted a new VR headset prototype at CES 2017. With an affordable device and the Windows platform behind them, could Lenovo help bring VR into the mainstream?

Microsoft Windows wants to venture into VR, and one of the companies that they are partnering with to do so is Lenovo VR.

Lenovo showed off their half of the Microsoft VR partnership at CES 2017. Right now the device has no name. It’s slated to be released later this year, and the price point is allegedly half of what the HTC Vive cost at debut.

Entries at CES are often conceptual, so there is always the chance that Lenovo’s design could be a flash in the pan. Yet, with support from Windows, the product seems a sure fire deal. For now, keep an eye on it.

Okay Lenovo, Let’s see Some Specs

The Lenovo VR headset will feature two 1440 x 1440 OLED screens, which is a higher resolution than what the HTC Vive or Oculus Rift can support. The Lenovo VR headset runs on the Windows Holographic platform, sporting a front-mounted camera that can pick up depth information to provide room-scale VR. It won’t use any motion controllers, but you’ll be able to use your familiar third-party or official Xbox controller.

The headset puts most of the weight on your forehead, suspending the viewing area in front of your eyes rather than just hanging it on your face. It should also be more comfortable than that HTC Vive, as it is almost 200g lighter.

For many, money may be too tight to buy into an untested VR experience. If that’s you, you’ll be glad to hear that this entry into the market is priced at “less than $400.” Exactly how much it will cost has yet to be released. Regardless, more affordable VR headsets will help push the technology out into the mainstream.
