Rumors have surfaced that Apple will ditch Intel by 2020 and begin to equip their computers with their own company-made Mac processors.

In a story published by Bloomberg on Monday, it was reported that Apple is planning to replace Intel chips starting in 2020 with the company’s very own Mac chips.

Bloomberg’s anonymous sources said that the initiative, code-named Kalamata, is now in its early development stage. However, it is allegedly just a part of a bigger project that will enable Apple’s devices, including Macs, iPhones, and iPads, to “work more similarly and seamlessly together.”

To date, Apple has already designed its own A-series chips for its iPhone and iPad devices. Aside from Intel, the company also uses other chips made by Broadcom, Qualcomm, and Arm in its products.

Apple’s growing interest in artificial intelligence and augmented reality has apparently influenced its plans to design and build its most significant chips in-house. With its own chips, Apple would have the freedom to release new product models without relying on Intel’s processor roadmap.

Apple remains mum on the matter, citing a policy of non-comment with regards to speculation.

Bloomberg further noted that the shift would be a big blow to Intel, who reportedly helped revive the Mac. Currently, sales to Apple make up around 5 percent of Intel’s annual revenue.

Following the news that Apple will be replacing Intel chips, Intel’s market shares dropped by as much as 9 percent on Monday. According to CNBC, the drop was the “worst for Intel since January 2016.”

Aside from releasing product models within its own timeline, using custom Mac chips would make Apple the only computer manufacturer to utilize its own processor. Major computer manufacturers today like HP, Lenovo, and Asus all rely on Intel processors.

Do you believe that Apple would push through with its plan to create its own Mac chips?
