European Union Announces 5G Guidelines For Member States

Amid pressure from the U.S. to shutdown Huawei, the EU announced strict 5G guidelines on Wednesday. No, the European Union is not banning the Chinese telecom giant.

The EU guideline charges members with the responsibility of rolling-out of the next-gen mobile network safely. It also recommends a thorough screening of operators.

With that said, the European Commission didn’t name Huawei or call for an outright ban of any supplier in its so-called “toolbox.” Instead, it suggests that countries assess the risk profile of individual suppliers.

That way, they can apply the appropriate restrictions for those considered to be high risk, including preventing access to “key assets defined as critical and sensitive.” Also, the EU recommends that member states avoid major dependency on a single supplier or even suppliers that they consider being high risk.

The European Union’s 5G Guidelines and Huawei Ban

For months, the union has struggled to reach a compromise between Huawei’s 5G dominance and the security concerns from Washington.

With the new guidelines, any ban on the China telecom giant would be up to EU member states. Meanwhile, the recommendations would enable European capitals to resist pleas from D.C.

Shortly after the EU’s announcement, Huawei released a statement to welcome the new rules.

The Statement reads:

“Huawei has been present in Europe for almost 20 years and has a proven track record with regard to security. We will continue to work with European governments and industry to develop common standards to strengthen the security and reliability of the network.”

The company described the guideline as a “non-biased and fact-based approach towards 5G security.” And this would allow Europe to have a faster and more secure 5G network, says Huawei.

The United States has banned Huawei from its 5G-rollout due to security concerns. And it has urged other countries in Europe to do the same.

But, the EU commissioner for the single market, Thierry Breton, says that the union would never target any company. He further emphasized that the new system was based on “objective criteria.

We in Europe accept everyone, but we have rules—these rules are clear and exacting,” says Breton.
