Google has just announced that it will be discontinuing the classic version of YouTube on desktop this March.
Back in 2017, Google introduced a new material design for YouTube. It included several features like the Dark Theme and an updated logo.
To date, people still have the option to opt-out of the new YouTube desktop version and continue using the classic one. However, the company noted that the old version of YouTube on desktop lacks many of the updates it implemented these past years.
So, to ensure that all desktop users can experience YouTube’s latest features and updates, Google decided to discontinue the old YouTube version.
The company said in its announcement:
“Enter 2020 and the older versions are missing many of the new features and design improvements we’ve introduced over the past 3 years, including top requests based on your feedback (see most recent update here). That’s why the older version will be going away in March and you’ll only be able to access newer desktop versions to enjoy the best of YouTube.”

Switch to the new YouTube on Desktop
According to Google, people who are still using the old YouTube version will receive a notification prompting them to “Switch to the new YouTube.”
Google further said that users might be required to update their browser if it’s not compatible with the latest YouTube version.
The announcement received mixed reactions from users, but many appear to be displeased with the decision. Below are some of the comments left by users on YouTube’s announcement page:
“I still absolutely despise the new desktop layout and wish you would still let users keep the old layout instead of completely getting rid of it. I believe your team could easily implement the new features on the older layout, but just don’t want to bother with it.” ~ Some DumbAlt on YouTube
“I understand your intentions, but I’m unsure if I’m ready to switch since I’m not a fan of the new desktop layout. What happens if I don’t switch to the new YouTube by March?” ~ Frank Coufal
“The new design is awful. Please let us keep the old one.” ~ Spooky Cupcake
“Youtube should make a public poll on the new design. Like a question should be: What changes to the new design would make you like to see? I also encourage people to make their design concepts of youtube. It would be awesome to see design concepts like this. People already make their own designs of the operating system windows ten,, so why not youtube too?” ~ Aaron Armstrong
